If I am auditioning to be a vocalist, do I need to have prior musical experience?
For vocalists, prior musical experience is always welcome, such as choir involvement, etc., but if you don’t have any, fret not! You should still sign up for auditions, and the tutors will gage your singing ability. A few of us get recruited even though we lack the experience, but of course you will need to put in the necessary hard work and effort to familiarise yourself with the setting.
When do you usually hold auditions?
We usually hold auditions in the first semester of the academic year late August. We will duly inform you of the dates on our blog, Facebook, and Twitter. We aim to keep you in the know!
What do auditions usually involve?
(Please note that these are only basic guidelines to what auditions usually involve. There may be slight differences or additional requirements during the actual audition, subjected to the decisions of the tutors present.)
For instrumentalists, be prepared to sight read, and play major, harmonic minor, melodic minor scales. You will play a melody according to 1 jazz standard provided by the band. Also be prepared for improvisation of the jazz standard.
For vocalists, prepare two songs, one preferably belonging to the jazz genre.Be prepared to undergo basic aural tests and a short interview.
Tip: Try to avoid oversung jazz songs like Fly Me to The Moon and L-O-V-E! You have been warned :)
How often are practices?
There will be one big band practice every Saturday afternoon, and one combo (small) band practice during a weekday afternoon/evening. The specific time will be set by respective band leaders.
Every month there will also be a session of individual tutorship.
How often are performances?
For small bands, it depends on the frequency of gigs they are invited to perform at. They can be award ceremonies, dinner functions, etc.
For the big band, the regular showcase is usually around February/March.
