Serving up a potent brew of lush and inviting jazz - the bossa, blues, swing, bebop, fusion, ragtime, soul and arrangements from the traditional to the contemporary, the NUS Jazz Band was formed in 1994 by a group of dynamic musicians and jazz enthusiasts.
We are the only full fledged tertiary big jazz band (+), with around 50 members performing together. We are unique in the Singaporean jazz scene which consists mainly of small jazz bands, from jazz band trios and quartets to the biggest being 10-piece ensembles.
The Band comprises small and large ensembles:
- The quintet (5-piece ensemble)
- The nonet (9-piece)
- The tentet (10-piece)
Being less rigid in structure, the smaller ensembles play their own compositions. They explore and experiment with the wide spectrum of jazz arrangements and styles.
Under the direction of Mr Iskandar Ismail, a Cultural Medallion Award Recipient, we experiment with a wide spectrum of jazz arrangement and styles, ranging from traditional swing to contemporary funk.
Our very talented ensemble and alumni perform regularly in various venues, like the Esplanade and assorted clubs. Notable performers include Adi & Shi Li, Sarah Cheng-De Winne, Rani Singham, Norman Seck and Meryl Joan Lee.
The NUS Jazz Band held a series of sold out performances at the NUS Arts Festival - Irresistibly Yours, Soul Remedy, Treat Her Like A Lady! The popular band has also performed at the following events:
